Bittenbydesign.com - Freelance graphic and web design Sydney Interview

Name of your website?

Bittenbydesign.com - Freelance graphic and web design Sydney

Your name?

Nicholas Turner

Your Location (city, etc)

Sydney

When did you start your website and why?

The website has been online for seven months, and it was a way to get business from international sources that I would not of otherwise been exposed to. And it was nice to see my work put together in a nice simple website to show to clients prior to meeting with them.

Please give us a short summary of your website, business model, etc

Bittenbydesign.com is a freelance graphic and web design business located in Sydney Australia, supplying quality service digitally worldwide for printed and electronic media.

What has been the most difficult part of creating and running your website?

As a web designer, I find getting the time to work on my own site the hardest part.

What has been the easist part of operating your website?

Easiest? As I deal with web problems and solutions on a daily basis, I find any problems I encounter have either already been solved in a previous job, or will give me a chance to impart this new knowledge to all the other sites I have worked on.

What was your biggest mistake?

Leaving it for so long to get it online! I had a beautiful flash site in development, but I was having to wait until it was totally finished before launching it, and giving up on that and going down the HTML path has pretty much meant I have something up, and that is something I can now build upon.

Who maintains your website and why?

That would be a self maintained website. Who knows my work better than myself? Now that I put at least a few hours a week aside to work on it, and promote my site, I find it a lot easier than spending that time getting someone else to do it for me.

Tell us how your business has benefitted from your website?

It is the way I get further business and the way I am exposed to potential customers in other countries.

What are your views on ecommerce and the future of the internet?

I think there will be a steady drift onto the net, and a requirement for every retail store to duplicate their store online to remain competitive.

What are your views on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

I think it is important in the regard that it looks at getting better user relevant content on the web. And not just throwing up keyword after keyword in the hope to get a higher ranking. (which is just bad SEO).

What are your views on Search Engines? Have they helped or hindered your website?

Helped, especiallly as getting a site ready for a search engine makes you think a bit more about what you have and what you are wanting to put on your site.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Word of mouth. It seems to draw the most traffic for me.

What method has been least successful for promoting your website?

Print. Print has to be the least successful so far.

What would you like to see change with respect to the internet?

Yes, more relevant information, and a cull of all the websites built in the early ninties that are no longer maintained. Or even just an automatic bad link remover. Now that would be nice.

What is your website address?
