I was visiting my friends' blog when I came across the professional blog of one batchmate of mine. He's working under our department's web science laboratory, researching on innovative ways on how to make the web more accessible and more friendly to everyone. Their lab is mostly focusing on reinventing the web and developing applications that help aid people, especially when it comes to health and education.
Around last month, each of the labs had to make some sort of brochure for an exhibit. The lab where I was in, the computer security laboratory, had its own. Meanwhile, the web science group also had its own, and my friend did post it online, since he was the one who conceptualized it. I must say that I like the idea for the brochure.
It basically compared the web to a piece of bread. He used it as the metaphor of the things that they do in Web Science. A piece of bread can be presented in a manner that depends on how you like it. For example, you can have peanut butter for your bread. Or maybe peanut butter and jelly. Or maybe butter. Or maybe strawberry jam. Or maybe just plain bread. Likewise, you can customize your web experience depending on your taste by using applications and websites that are appropriate for your lifestyle. No wonder the theme of their flyer was, "Web: The Way You Want It."
I can't help but agree. The Web has gone from being a boxed-up tool of the 90s into a dynamic environment and community used in order to aid human beings with their specific, personalized needs. As webmasters, it is then our task to help the growing online community. It is our task to develop applications and websites that fit the description of our very picky visitors (and clients).
As for the computer security's brochure, welll, let's just say that it does not fit the discussion we have here right now. This isn't a blog on privacy and computer security after all. Hehe.
